How many times have you heard people talk about personal brand?
I will be honest I never quite understood it, I always nodded and said yes I am well aware of my personal brand, but really in my mind it was a little like what the…..
Then I spent years observing those around me and saw how I viewed them versus how they wanted to be perceived. Generally I came to the conclusion that if I was so worried with my personal brand I would end up just exhausted. It reminds me of the school playground how we all tried to be someone we weren’t just to either fit in, be popular or in some cases to fade into the background.
Additionally I noticed some struggled to identify how aligned it was with their authentic self. It all just seemed like a lot of effort I could just put into doing my job.
For those of you that aren’t familiar with the term authentic self, it’s very simple, it is a strategy that encourages people to be themselves in order to connect with those around them. For example if I share who I truly am in a business environment it is expected that I would gain the trust, confidence, respect and communicate well with my peers and customers.
If I pull energy to be someone in the workplace that is not in line with my authentic self the more energy it will pull, the more effort it would be to navigate conversations and the less a person is trusted, which then leads to communication gaps.
Now these are the things I hope my personal brand represents honesty, transparent, persistent, driven, quirky, unique style, accountable and passionate.
Here are a list of things my personal brand may represent despite my best effort, too forthright, impersonal, dictative, challenging. Not that I have an issue with most of the actions that would give me this branding. It is more the way people perceive them rather than notice the fact that I do mean well.
For example I will never forget training I joined in Singapore in which a colleague based in Korea was open enough to tell me on behalf of most attending my presence had immediately intimidated her. I had run into the forum excited to connect with my colleagues, ready to be apart of a network, ready to change the world! It was expressed a few times that they liked when I engaged with the trainer as it allowed them to sit back and fad into the background but desperate for me to not engage with them directly. For me, it was a lonely feeling.
If you have worked closely enough with me you will know that I do anything I possibly can for the people close to me, and that includes my colleagues, my customers, my company.
I work from my calendar, my projects and task lists. All get allocated time to manage my efforts according to urgent and important, I keep my word or apologies and find solutions should something change the outcome originally anticipated. I give everything in life my all, there is no compromise.
With all this thought provoking discussion, about my personal branding aligning with my authentic self, passion, all the formal and informal training I have had tied in with my natural skills and plain ants in pants nature.
I have decided to launch my event planning services. You will find the ability to book me in soon on my website. There will be a number of different services, packages and add-ons.
